Industrial Strength Design:
How Brooks Stevens Shaped Your World

The Milwaukee Art Museum began planning the Brooks Stevens exhibition in late 2002. Curator Glenn Adamson wanted an online presence seperate from the Museum's Web site. The goal was a site that complemented the exhibition that would run through the Summer of 2003 as well as the traveling and permanent exhibits.

The resulting Web site highlighted one of the most influential industrial designers of the 20th century, Brooks Stevens. Stevens was a design theorist. He coined the term "planned obsolescence," and worked for such companies as Miller Brewery, Allen-Bradley, Harley Davidson, and more.

The nostalgic design featured a Stevens biography, examples of his work, educational resources, and a fully searchable archive of more than 7,500 items housed at the Museum.

The response to the site was amazing, and the quotes below really make the project one of my favorites and most fullfilling.

Quotes:

"If Brooks Stevens would have designed a site, it would have looked like this."
- Curator Glenn Adamson

"The family [of Brooks Stevens] thinks [you] did a great job, and I'm sure the public will be equally pleased!"
